In most versions of the game, the dealer deals the cards in a clockwise rotation. During the first round of the game, the dealer deals each player a facedown card. Then, during the second and third rounds of the game, each player will receive a card faceup and can discard one or more of the cards in their hand.
After the fourth round of betting, all players will be able to see their hole cards. Players then choose to discard or draw additional cards. When a player draws new cards, they are called a “draw.” Depending on the variation, they may be allowed to raise their bets if they have a good hand, or to fold if they do not.

During the 1970s, Texas hold ’em became a popular game. Until that time, most poker was played with a standard deck of 52 cards.
